Spiez Alpine Wine Culture

Spiez winegrowing is a vibrant interplay of nature, tradition, innovation and passion. Between the snow-covered peaks of the Bernese Alps and the sparkling waters of Lake Thun, wines mature that express their origins in every sip, carrying the region’s centuries-old wine culture into the future with renewed vitality.
The vineyards of Spiez are among the highest wine-growing areas north of the Alps. The sunny south-facing slopes of Spiezberg and the terraced vineyards above the lake benefit in particular from the heat stored by Lake Thun, while the foehn and cool evening breezes ensure slow, balanced ripening. On the limestone-rich soils, some of which are shaped by glacial moraine deposits, Riesling-Sylvaner, the robust Sauvignac and Souvignier Gris, as well as Pinot Noir and Cabernet Jura, develop their characteristic freshness, delicate aromas, alpine elegance and distinctive character.
At the same time, the vineyards invite visitors to slow down and explore. Walking trails and a vineyard discovery trail wind through the terraces, past scenic benches, dry-stone walls, biodiversity areas and sun-warmed slopes, repeatedly opening up sweeping views across the lake, castle and mountains. In this way, the cultural landscape can be experienced with all the senses – by locals and visitors alike.
Behind the wines are passionate, forward-thinking winegrowers who tend the steep vineyards with great respect for nature. Every task in the vineyard and cellar requires experience, sensitivity and perseverance. Traditional knowledge and modern expertise go hand in hand, allowing quality to flourish while ensuring that the landscape remains vibrant and worth experiencing for generations to come.
Spiez Alpine Wine Culture is also closely connected with the region’s hotels and restaurants. Together, they create culinary experiences in which Spiez, its alpine wines and the flavours of the surrounding region come together in perfect harmony – sometimes delicate and fresh, sometimes bold and spicy, and often accompanied by regional specialities from the Bernese Oberland.
Each bottle thus becomes an expression of a unique landscape and of the people who shape it with dedication and a deep connection to nature – defined by sun, stone, wind and craftsmanship, with a character that is authentic and unmistakable.
