Hotel Eden Spiez is a place where time seems to slow to a gentler pace. Anyone who has floated in the outdoor brine pool, gazing across Lake Thun and the Bernese Alps, will understand why guests return time and again.

Some places stay with you long after you leave. Hotel Eden Spiez is one of them. Not because it clamours for attention, but quite the opposite: here, you experience that rare feeling of truly arriving – not only physically, but mentally too. Spiez Bay, nestled between vineyards, the castle and the vast blue expanse of Lake Thun, plays its part. And the hotel itself, an Art Nouveau building dating from the early 20th century, enhances this feeling even further. Hotel Eden Spiez has belonged to Lisbeth Mathys since 2004. The entrepreneur had the property extensively renovated without compromising its character. Wherever possible, she restored the splendour of the Belle Époque.

A Fountain of Youth with Lake Views

At the heart of the hotel is the Eden Spa, a wellness oasis covering more than 650 square metres. Step inside and the hustle and bustle of everyday life gives way to soothing tranquillity. But the real highlight is the outdoor brine pool, said to be the only one of its kind in Switzerland. The water, heated to 33°C, is treated using special technology that gives it the structure of fresh spring water and is additionally enriched with pure brine from Swiss saltworks. The result is silky-soft water that feels noticeably different from ordinary pool water. “The water feels softer and helps the body relax more quickly,” explains Director Jäger.

Floating in the brine pool while the Niesen is reflected in the water is one of those experiences that is difficult to put into words. You simply have to experience it for yourself. Those who wish can complement their visit with the spa’s other facilities: a Himalayan salt room, where the moist, salty air evokes a day by the sea; a Finnish sauna and a gentler bio sauna; a steam bath; experience showers; and several relaxation areas.

For those seeking even greater privacy, the “Private Spa Suite” offers an exclusive retreat with an aromatic bath in a double bathtub, Finnish sauna, bio sauna, steam bath and private relaxation bed. Massages can also be added to the experience on request.

Cuisine with Regional Roots

After the spa, the Belle Époque restaurant awaits with panoramic windows and generously spaced tables. Head chef Matthias Willkommen creates cuisine based on carefully selected ingredients, refined with spices from around the world. The menu changes with the seasons, while the daily specials change every day – an important detail, especially for hotel guests spending several evenings at the hotel.

Some of the ingredients quite literally grow just outside the hotel. The 3,500-square-metre hotel park includes a kitchen garden with apples, figs, cherries, berries, edible flowers and herbs. Whatever nature provides in each season finds its way into the kitchen or is used to decorate the hotel. An insect hotel in the park completes the picture of a hotel where sustainability is not merely a marketing message, but part of everyday life.

From the Vineyards of Spiez

Anyone strolling through Spiez Bay will immediately notice the vineyards climbing the slopes. Spiez has a centuries-old winegrowing tradition, which the Spiez Winegrowers’ Cooperative has been actively cultivating for almost a hundred years. At the 2021 Grand Prix du Vin Suisse, the Spiez Riesling-Sylvaner won first prize in its category. This is no coincidence, but the result of location, microclimate and skilled craftsmanship.

Together with cellar master Ursula Irion, Hotel Eden Spiez has created its own range of Eden wines, including an anniversary wine from the neighbouring vineyard. The hotel cellar holds 250 different wines. For guests interested in local wine culture, the hotel offers tastings and visits to the winegrowers’ cooperative – an experience that adds an authentic sense of place to any stay.

Patrick Jäger personally leads wine walks through the vineyard, combining a leisurely stroll with wine history and a tasting among the vines. What began as an activity for seminar groups has developed into an experience in its own right and can now also be booked by holiday guests.

Day Guests Are Welcome Too

You do not have to be a hotel guest to experience the Eden Spa. The wellness area is also open to external visitors. Day Spa visits can be booked, while individual treatments are available separately. Enjoying lunch at the Belle Époque restaurant or a coffee in the Eden Bistro-Bar is an ideal way to discover the hotel.

All 45 rooms and suites have a balcony, many with views towards the Jungfrau region and the hotel’s 3,000-square-metre park. A day visit can quickly leave you wishing you had booked an overnight stay. As you leave, you already know: you will be back.
