Floating Fondue Experience

I have to admit: at first, I found it hard to imagine having fondue in a floating caravan. But unusual experiences like this are exactly what interest me, so I was keen to give it a try. On a cool but sunny winter’s day – perfect fondue weather – my partner and I finally set off. We met at 11 a.m. in Spiez Bay, where we first received a brief introduction. As the Sealander can be operated without a boating licence, we were shown the most important rules as well as the equipment on board, including a sink, refrigerator and speaker.

We had a full four hours to enjoy our winter experience. We leisurely cruised out onto Lake Thun, found a spot with the best possible view and prepared our fondue on the gas burner. After plenty of stirring – in a figure eight, of course – it was time to enjoy our fondue. The flavourful cheese, crusty bread, fresh accompaniments and fruity white wine made for a truly delicious lunch.

What I particularly enjoyed was the combination of crisp winter air and cosy comfort. Sitting on the boat, wrapped up warmly and equipped with hot-water bottles, while enjoying fondue in the middle of the lake is certainly not something you experience every day.

My personal highlight, however, was the view. Lake Thun, the lightly snow-covered mountain peaks and Spiez Castle from a 360-degree perspective left a lasting impression. I had never eaten fondue with a view like that before.

For anyone looking for an unusual winter activity, the Fondue Sealander offers a special way to combine culinary enjoyment with nature. The experience shows just how different fondue can feel when enjoyed against such a unique backdrop.

The experience costs CHF 290 for two people, with each additional person costing CHF 40. The Fondue Sealander can accommodate up to four people.
