a personal note from the tourism director

Dear Guests
At the moment, as I write these lines, it is summer. As Spiez’s Tourism Director and Economic Development Officer, I work at the Info Centre right next to Spiez railway station, with a wonderful view of the castle, vineyards, lake and the mountains opposite, including the Sigriswiler Rothorn and Niederhorn.
Lake Thun lies between my home in Oberhofen and the Info Centre, which are 5.2 km apart as the crow flies. My usual commute takes me around almost half the lake via Thun and covers just over 16 km.
This morning, I crossed the lake to work on a stand-up paddleboard (SUP). It took me exactly one hour to cover the five or so kilometres. There was no wind and the water was calm. I have experienced much rougher conditions. Paddling against wind and waves is considerably more strenuous and, depending on the conditions, takes much longer. It was a wonderful feeling to glide across the lake in complete silence early in the morning as the sun rose. Once again, I was reminded how fortunate I am to live and work in this beautiful region. We often say that we work where others come on holiday. And it’s true.
And now you, dear readers, are spending your holidays here with us. I’m delighted to welcome you – enjoy your stay! You have chosen the quieter months of the low season. Water sports may be less popular at this time of year, but winter activities take centre stage instead. And Spiez and the surrounding region have plenty to offer in that respect too.
This newspaper gives you a glimpse of some of the many ways to spend your leisure time or holidays here. If you would like more information, visit spiez.com or drop by the Info Centre in Spiez. We will be happy to help.
Enjoy your holiday!
Stefan Seger
Tourism Director, Spiez
